Chris Carson has setback in rehab process

Indianapolis Colts v Seattle Seahawks

RENTON -- Pete Carroll's optimism regarding the potential return of running back Chris Carson this season ran into a big of a snag this week.

Carson, who has been on injured reserve since early October due to a severe high-ankle sprain and fractured leg, had a setback during his rehab process this week and his status moving forward is in doubt.

"He's been doing great," Carroll said. "Did a little bit of an ankle turn, just caught it a little bit, so we just got to make sure we know what that means as he bounces back from it."

The seventh-round pick out of Oklahoma State leaped to the front of Seattle's running back group to earn the starting job through the first month of the season. He still has the most rushing yards of any Seahawks running back this season (208) despite only playing in the first four games of the year.

Carson was injured when Indianapolis Colts linebacker Jon Bostic landed on the back of his leg making a tackle. Carson subsequently got bent backward over Bostic with his leg pinned beneath the Colts defender.

The ankle injuries required surgery and Carson was placed on injured reserve. He's eligible to return at any time having been on injured reserve for at least eight weeks. Carroll had been extremely positive about Carson's chances to get back to practice soon. However, it's uncertain just how much of a setback Carson has experienced and if it will end any chance of him returning this year.

"We were looking to try to find the time when we could put him back on the practice field," Carroll said. "We were next week, the week after that, we were looking with real optimism but I don't know if that's going to happen after the little setback. We'll have to see when we get through the weekend. We won't know until like Wednesday or something next week where that fits."

Notes:

-- Cornerback DeShawn Shead completed his first week of practice after missing the first four-plus months of the season recovering from a torn ACL.

"He did really well. He had a good first week," Carroll said. "He made it through a lot of stuff, he had a lot of drill work. He got into some team periods, did a little bit of one-on-ones. Very controlled, first time out, but he had a very positive week."

Carroll said their first focus is just getting him back on the field and seeing how he fits in. Special teams would be the first step for Shead before working back into the mix at cornerback.

-- Safety Kam Chancellor, guard Oday Aboushi and defensive tackle Nazair Jones are all out for Sunday's game against the Jaguars.

Carroll said Aboushi, who dislocated his shoulder two weeks ago against the Atlanta Falcons, is out for the season.

Chancellor and Aboushi remain on the team's active roster due to salary cap reasons.

Jones will miss a second game after spraining an ankle in practice last week.

-- Defensive end Dion Jordan will be a game-time decision as he works back from a neck stinger.

"He did practice some this week," Carroll said. "We'll take him all the way up until game-time."
